When you are looking for the college you'll attend for your post-secondary education, one of the first and most important factors you should look for is accreditation. But what exactly is accreditation, and why is it so important when you're looking to add to your education? What Is It? Accreditation is an independent review process colleges and universities undergo voluntarily to determine whether they provide a consistent, quality education. The US Department of Education publishes a list of nationally recognized accrediting agencies, but the national government does not actually have an accrediting agency of its own. Instead, agencies are independent, and they are either regional or national in their scope.
